Did it!
Managed to get to 200 km but it took three runs totalling 22.1 km today to do so.
Very happy.
Next month? Well, wait a few days and find out!
Onward!

The 366 runs of my 57th year - Week 2
Hey there,
I have managed a second full week, got the km count up but due to some bad planning on my part, didn't get my weekly LSD in. No matter, I was focused on a slightly different goal, in addition to running every day, of course. While my intention is to run at least 200 km each month of this project, that would be from the 12th to the 11th. That being said, I am getting very close to 200 km now at the end of the month with two days left. This will be difficult but I am going to try.
Now, notice my age... this is not an easy quest for a 55 year old guy who is 20 kg overweight and I have to say that I am feeling it this evening. That being said, I have a plan. Stay tuned.
OK - this week's stats!
Not breaking any records here, there are people who are running 300 - 400 km in a week, complete lunatics but I do understand the urge. Unfortunately I have to work.
Well, I will update again, for good or ill, on October 1st. 32 km in 2 days. Onward!

The 366 runs of my 57th year - End of September Approaches
Hi everyone,
Was out for a run here in Calgary this morning and it was actually cold (4C) when I started. Warmed up nicely and completed a really nice 10 km run around the my hotel.
When I got back to the hotel, Strava informed me that I had just crossed the 120 km threshold for the month and had six days remaining to get to 200. Let's do the math... 80 km, 6 days sounds like just over 13 km per day, with one long distance run in there (Sunday), should be doable. So, keep your checking in here, I will be updating again on Sunday and on the 30th to hopefully report the good news!
I have now managed 13 days, I think my longest contiguous running streak ever but have still so very far to go. In fact, I think that I am now just 3 1/2% of the way done - so think of it as 1 km on a 30 km run, just starting out!

The 366 runs of my 57th year - the first week for real!
Hey everyone,
My running tools track Monday to Sunday as the "running week" and from this point on, I will as well - reporting here weekly.
Well nine runs under my belt. Couple of observations, I am not really pushing my cardio, my "points in the red" on Strava indicates that I am maintaining rather than improving cardio - not that it is a bad thing. My cardio is pretty damn good, but it does tell me that I could, perhaps, be taking some of the shorter runs a bit harder and I will do that with my next run, tomorrow. In the mean time, here is what my week looked like.
Today's run, my Long Slow Distance (LSD) is shown below - truly lovely, and if you click on the map you will see some pictures I took on walking breaks.
Back at you in a week but in the mean time, keep the road moving under your feet!

366 Runs of my 57th year - Week 1, well sorta...
Hi everyone
Well I have no completed the seventh run of my quest to run 366 times (367 actually) between September 12 2015 and September 12 2016. So far it has gone ok, in fact, better than ok.
As many of you know, I occasionally struggle with depression but don't like the side effects of anti-depressants so running is how I manage it. There are tonnes of great articles on this subject (http://www.health.harvard.edu/mind-and-mood/exercise-and-depression-report-excerpt) and at least one fantastic book that I highly recommend Exercise for Mood and Anxiety: Proven Strategies for Overcoming Depression and Enhancing Well-Being: Michael Otto, Jasper Smits. In any case, after years of loading my system with depressants it is no surprise that my brain chemistry is a bit off and running helps. Well, that is my story, anyway, and I am sticking to it!
So, now we are one week into the challenge. After this post I will be updating the blog every Sunday or Monday and will be posting my runs from Strava for the week here. In addition I will add any amusing or interesting stuff that may be of note. Further, I am now tweeting my runs via the handle @pmackin
So here we are the first week.
Because I get to travel a fair bit, these runs often happen in a number of different cities or towns and I am very pleased that I get a chance to do to that - it is one of the great joys of running, no matter where you are, just put on your shoes (and heart rate monitor, GPS watch and iPod) and go!

The 366 runs of my 57th year - Introduction
Hey fellow running enthusiasts
I am someone who always likes to have a project on the go, usually tied to new years or my birthday. This past Saturday was the last day in my 56th year and my 1301 day sober. With my 56th birthday on Sunday (beginning my 57th year) and 2016 being a leap year, I decided that I would attempt, note the word attempt, to run every day for a year.
Let us define this a bit better. To meet the goal I must:
I am going to keep this low key until I have successfully navigated to the end of September. I am also going to use this as an excuse to run in every city or place I visit, and if I do my job right, there will be a number of those places coming up.
Wish me luck!

With my 56th birthday on Sunday (beginning my 57th year) and 2016 being a leap year, I decided that I would attempt, note the word attempt, to run every day for a year.
Let us define this a bit better. To meet the goal I must:
- Run every day for a full year from September 12 2015 to September 12 2016 - that will actually be 367 days.
- A run will be a minimum of 3 km
- A week will have runs which total no less than 40 km
- A month will have total distance run of no less than 200 km
- If I miss a day, I will have three days to make it up with two runs in a single day
- Under the case of inclement weather, up to two days per month may be done on an indoor running track or treadmill
- I will do no less than 6 races - minimum of 1/2 marathon distance
Everything else is icing.
This will be daunting. So far I have 4 days under my belt totalling 30 km - when I am done, that will seem inconsequential. This blog will be updated weekly, or on special occasions as warranted. Specific goals and targets will be established every month, where possible through Strava.
Tonight's run:
I am going to keep this low key until I have successfully navigated to the end of September. I am also going to use this as an excuse to run in every city or place I visit, and if I do my job right, there will be a number of those places coming up.
Wish me luck!
Paul
